There are Christians today who are changing the name of Jesus Christ. I believe that they are using some version of a Hebrew name. I’ve noticed this occurring in some modern worship and spiritual songs. Scripture declares that his name is Jesus. God gave him this name. Do we Christians change it now ourselves? Jesus will be given another name as stated in the book of Revelation, but we Christians will not be giving him this new name as far as I know. The name of Jesus has stood the test of time throughout history. I know that I have spoken the name of Jesus many times in my life when I was afraid, sick, fighting sin, looking for God to work changes in me, seeking his help, his deliverance, his wisdom, his understanding, his protection, etc. This new Hebrew name of Jesus is unproven. Is this Hebrew name the same Jesus of the Bible? Maybe not. I am quite satisfied that the name of Jesus Christ is effective for the believing Christian. There is no reason to try to change this name for the purpose of aesthetics, to be cool, to relate better to the Jews, etc. I’m not seeing the purpose or the need to make this name change other than to confuse and undermine his God given name,Jesus Christ. Do we have liberty as Christians to change the name of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in scripture? No, we do not. God made name changes as he saw fit. God was the one who changed Jacob’s name, Abram’s name, Sari’s name, Cepheus’s name, Saul’s name, and so on.
